My Daughter Is Pro-Choice
One of the few endearing developments of the endless 2012 campaign season was the discovery that at least a few third graders are not total fucking morons. During the horrible and embarrassing Republican War on Women, my daughter told me that she believes it is very important for women to have access to healthcare and abortion services because if they get sick or pregnant when it is not healthy for them, they may not be able to have babies anymore, or they might die, or they might not be able to take care of the children they already have. This was not my explanation to her regarding the issue. I stuck mostly to the equality/civil rights issues involved and not so much on the healthcare side. She picked up immediately on the healthcare angle and the freedom of choice in health care. She said it was not right to have laws that stopped women from having choices and being healthy. Now this girl is the most stereotypical of girly girls. She loves babies and pink and pink things and kittens and wants to have babies and be a mommy when she grows up. She even knows where babies come from and how they get out, and that has only slightly diminished her enthusiasm. It appears though, that despite in addition to being the typical girl, she may also be is a rational, well-considered young feminist. If rocking feminism is part of being the stereotypical eight year old girl now, that may absolutely would be the best news American society has had in a long fucking time.
