Sanders failed again. And every kind, decent person in America should have learned a tragic lesson. But now the lesson everyone must learn going forward is that he was never going to win because he was part of the Democratic Party. His most important failure was aligning himself with the Democratic Party when he got to Washington. He needed to learn the lesson Ralph Nader tried to teach, but his own ambition prevented him from seeing that truth. Sanders' 2020 campaign was killed when he failed to run as an independent in 2016. It would have killed his career in the Democratic Party establishment, but it would have made him president in 2020. Or at least would have given him a legit chance, especially given the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic which ultimately smothered his Democratic primary campaign this spring but would have energized his high-profile independent campaign in the fall.
Sanders had so many supporters and so many donors and so many volunteers, more than anyone ever, but those people did not come out to vote for him, so it didn't matter at all. The Democratic Party was not their party and it never will be, so it worked against them to destroy their political movement.
The Democratic Party worked harder to stop Sanders than it ever did to stop Nixon, Reagan, Bush, Bush, or Trump. They know Biden is a senile rapey racist buffoon who stands no chance against Trump, but they did not care as long as Sanders lost first. The Dems are trying to teach you who they are, and now it is the time to listen.
The mainstream, neoliberal Dems and their voters are your enemy, and they are the enemy of everything decent and sane and hopeful in the world. They would rather vote for a senile rapist than a centrist; they would rather maintain their power and influence under a fascist lunatic than allow even the slightest hope for a better life for the working class and poor in America. The people who vote for Biden are more rotten and dangerous than the people who vote for Trump.
Learn the lesson Ralph Nader tried to teach you or your parents in 2000. There's not a dime's worth of difference between the Dems and the GOP, and in every way that matters, the Dems are far more evil and dangerous than the GOP.
Never vote for any candidate who does not support and does not run on the ideas and policies important to you, even Dems, especially Dems. And abandon any candidate--AOC will be this case soon enough--who fails to support those important ideas and policies once in office and sells out to the establishment.
The centrists in the Sanders campaign and the center-left voters who supported Sanders need a party of their own; this is a big reason why Sanders was never the answer. The Democratic Party is feckless and evil. They will kill you and kill progress before they let you win. Conservatives are toxic, and the Dems are hard-right conservative and racist. And Sanders is a Democrat.
But party building is hard--not as hard as taking over the Democratic Party, but destroying the conservative establishment of the Democratic Party and taking it over wholesale is effectively the same as building your own party in this. Either way, it's hard, thankless work. It's so hard that nobody does it, really. Not Sanders with the Dems. Not even Nader with the Green Party. But it is your only hope.
Build the infrastructure for the centrist ideas of universal health care, labor power, living wages, environmental justice. Do the hard and thankless work. Start local. Be relentless and vicious in only supporting the people who agree with you. Lose a city council or school board race five times in a row so someone else on your side can win one years later. That's how you start. And it sucks to lose and get nothing for so long, but that's how you win. Sanders didn't do it. AOC didn't do it. Nader didn't do it. But someone has to.
The conservatives did this well--lost races and got humiliated until they started winning--but they had the help of insane racist billionaires and the support of the existing establishment. Still, they did the work to turn the teabaggers into a semi-organized political force, pushing insane christian evil and screaming madness into the mainstream.
Do better than the racist, evil conservatives.
Do the work. Start at the local level and work upward. Be prepared for a long struggle. Do the easy stuff. Do the hard stuff. Abandon the Democratic Party forever. Never vote for any Dem outside of a decent few like Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib and maybe some decent Dems local to you. But be ruthless. Do not legitimize any racist conservative Democratic candidate with your vote.
Don't listen to Democratic careerists, whether elected or bureaucrat or in the media at any level, from the most fatuous millionaire pundit to lowliest Patreon YouTube hustler, when they tell you that voting Dem is damage mitigation. That's bullshit. Never legitimize any candidate or government that does not promote the ideas and policies important to you with your vote.
And never Biden, of course. Step one is to destroy the Democratic Party. Go.
