jobs blow around here
last week's jobs report was unfortunately at a totally-precedented technical level known in the industry as sucktastic. the reported unemployment is at 9% but the effective unemployment rate is really 20%. between the long-term jobless who receive no unemployment benefits, the underemployed and the new workers who have never had a paying job, 1 out of 5 americans are not able to find proper employment. this is destroying our society. for the most part it is quiet suffering, but lives and futures are being corroded, and the culture is crumbling at the same time. retirement funds are plundered by the markets or raided early to make the bills, shots for the kids or a trip to the dentist get postponed in the hope that doesn't turn out to be a huge mistake down the road, and for too many americans there is a growing unwillingness to swallow all the bullshit we need eat in order to make it through another day in the best of times. yes, the american-dream nonsense barely lasted a generation, but the last 40 years have been not just a decay but a dissolution of the spare progress america as a whole had achieved. high uneployment, a symptom of a dying economy, persisting year after year, with no political leadership for well-understood solutions and remedies (and until recently very little recognition) is destroying us. even the koch-suckers and the teabagger idiots will pay dearly in the end.
