Kona Process X On Pinkbike: Kona Shoulda Been More Generous With The Payola

Now, the Process X is not a terrible bike, but it is the typical wicked expensive for what you get modern Kona, making for an underwhelming choice these days. Plus. Kona nuking the last generation--last generation geometry, especially--Process 153 and replacing it with a longer and uglier aluminum-only update, didn't do the brand any favors. Pinkbike: when advertainment can't even get the basics right! Cyclocross bikes are not road bikes, so pretending they are is pretty fucking stupid. You can tell Matt Wragg really has no fucking idea what he's talking about when he mentions short stems, disc brakes, and wicked wide tires for serious road use. Marketing aside, rim brakes are better in every way on actual road bikes; wider tires are for off-road use, and slick road tires do not slide on wet roads any more than other road bike tires; properly-fitting road racing-style bikes need long stems to handle properly. It would be nice to get a piece by someone who rides road bikes like an elite bike racer--or possibly is an elite bike racer--but can also drop most anyone on a mountain bike, too. That would be interesting, and you wouldn't get some nonsense about off-road bikes pretending to be about road bikes.

Santa Cruz markets Juliana Bikes, but does not spend the money to make a women-specific frame. Giant, on the other hand, does have women's frames, but sometimes the bikes are not as capable. The newest 29er has less travel in the women's version--plus the geometry is not good. If you're gonna do a women's bike, get it right. On the other hand, yes, Julian and Liv are lifetyle brands, but all mountain bikes are lifestyle brands at this point, none more egregiously than Yeti and Ibis; Yetis are fucking garbage, but the rich white guys love the shit out of them. Yeti may have started as a racer's tool, but the only thing Yeti has left are the tools who buy them. Pinkbike always deserves the opprobrium, tho, just as much as rich white people need their taxes raised.
Women's bikes are probably a good thing, but in the age of plastic bikes from China, new or different frames cost big money up front, and the major brands found there was not really money to be made. Enough money, anyway. Orbea and Specialized--yeah, I know--had pretty excellent women's designs for road racing style bikes back five to 10 years ago--the Orbea Diva frame was amazing for its time--but those disappeared as prices began to skyrocket.
