she's easily the most enigmatic mekon. her wikipedia page is nothing. she's on linkedin, too--being a mekon is not exactly lucrative, as the abundance of day-jobs and other gigs will attest. i remember an article after she first joined the band way back in the pre-interwebs days stating that she was tom greenhalgh's girlfriend, and there is that bit o' banter on one of their records asking how 'a dainty young filly like sarah got on this fucking death-ride to nowhere?', but all of that musta gone by the wayside pretty quickly given the current state of the band's lineup, and it is now pretty much forgotten. still she's been in the band for 20 fucking years. when lu and steve and rico and susie all split, she hung on. perhaps she's painfully shy. i did read that she took part in the slideshow in chicago this year; that must've been interesting to say the least, and a chance to hear her voice! she never sings, and pretty much every mekon sings. is she perhaps secretly rico bell's daughter? that would be weird. she is often almost invisible on stage, behind the singers but always heard with her prominent playing. she's tiny in person; i walked right past her outside the bell house this year, but she looked so cool and little that i didn't have the heart to play creeper fanboy. as i said before, seeing them rocking out this year, sarah and steve were an unstoppable force; i can't imagine the mekons without sarah corina on bass.
Prior to her 20-year tenure with The Mekons, Sarah was a founder member of the awesome Bomb Party: http://ilovetotaldestruction.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/bomb-party-ray-gun-ep-1985.html
ReplyDeleteIndeed. I know a teeny bit about the Bomb Party. Thanks for the comment.
DeleteBeing in the Mekons for so long has not illuminated the lovely Ms. Corina as much as say the shamelessly oversharing Jon and Sally...
But watching the Mekons live these days is a revelation of a an absolutely kick-ass fucking rhythm section.
