(Let's also remember that AT&T was obsolete for a while, and then wasn't again.  And even if portable phones are ubiquitous on Earth in the movie, let's assume that someone is gonna figure out a way to rake in the bucks from the captive audience in orbit who wants to call someone planetside.)
