Poverty Of Hope; Poverty Of Possiblity
Poverty in America does not get much play, for obvious reasons. Neither political party wants to upset their corporate masters or make the voters feel bad by telling the truth about their poverty. The way up, and the way out, of poverty in America will be slow and painful. It will require a re-redistribution of the vast American wealth back down through the middle class all the way to the bottom. That will make many Americans uncomfortable, but fuck 'em. This piece is really well done regarding poverty and what it really means in 2012. On FDL, David Dayen takes the most effective political path, tying poverty to Social Security. This is where the first progress will be made: broadening and strengthening Social Security, and only then building up the society and culture to keep the wealth flowing to all strata of Americans.
